History

The history of physiotherapy date back to the time of Hippocrates. At that time patients used to massage, manual therapy or hydrotherapy using the therapeutic properties of water in order to be treated.

The first physical therapy studies in proffessional sense started in the early 17th century in Europe. Established in 1813 in Sweden the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) was first institution that performed physical therapy. Massage, manipulation and exercises were doing in this centre. Official certificate started to given by Swedish National Health and Social Welfore Committee in 1887 to the physical therapists.

In Turkey 1961 the first Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation High School opened by İhsan Doğramacı in Hacettepe University and this profession has came to Turkey.

Established in Gazi University Faculty of Health Sciences in 2008 the physiotherapy school received its first students in 2009. The School has practice and research units and work with some of department of Gazi University Hospital.

Before physical therapy techniques consisting of massage, traction and exercise have improved day by day and this situation is gained authorization to physiotherapists for work in hospitals, medicine centers, special education and rehabilitation centers, sports clinics, sports teams and many other areas.
